IP MATTERS
IP Matters provides an introduction for those who would like to understand more about Intellectual Property. During the training we will review the type of protection available such as patents, trademarks, design, copyright, know how and when to keep know how secret. We will also look at how to understand other people’s patents by reviewing patent documents already published, consider how to carry out a basic prior art search, a trademark availability search, and show how to navigate patent office websites to determine legal status of third party IP. Attendees will gain an understanding of how to protect their own innovations, in order to build an IP portfolio.

Afternoon:

PROSECUTION & LEGAL PATENT SEARCHING
This half day training is for people who are engaged with building, maintaining and defending a patent portfolio.
The course will cover how to build effective search strategies using classification, citation, name, semantic and other search tools, how to filter and analyse your results for the following types of portfolio search:
Pre-filing
Patentability / prior art
Top up prior to filing decision making
Validity
Opposition
Invalidity
Setting up patent watches & company and technology alerts

Morning:

CORE PATENT SEARCH SKILLS
This half day training covers the core essential skills needed for successful patent searching.  Join us to learn some essential subject search skills, find out about patent families, and how to approach company name and inventor name searches.  We teach the background and theory of how to use the IPC and CPC patent classification systems, and how to use forward and backward patent citations to broaden and narrow your search results.  Bring along your laptop to participate in two practical sessions where you will have access to professional patent search databases to practice your skills.

The course is aimed at those with less than two years patent searching, those who only search patents occasionally and/ or  who want to their knowledge of patent information and update search skills.

Afternoon:

FREEDOM TO OPERATE SEARCH AND ANALYSIS
Companies, large and small, all need to take care to ensure that, as far as possible, their potential product, or process, will not infringe any existing products or patents. In this training we will review how to prepare for FTO searching, how to stage FTO according to the product development stage and what you can do when your budget is limited. How to perform a limited ‘FTO’ on a small budget to minimize risks, and how to perform a full ‘clearance’. The training will also cover how to analyse the results, and how to report your findings.
